I think it's safe to say that none of us will find Robertson Quay dull anytime soon, with new restaurants like Spathe Public House and Bomba Paella Bar jazzing up the scene every now and then. It's communal dining over here at Spathe Public House, (nothing less than the "it" dining mode these days,) with a plethora of dishes with such varied influences you might just feel like you went on a round-the-world trip in 60 minutes.

Contemporary with a little Grunge

You could start off from the States with some All-American Metre Dog and Grilled Rib Eye. From there it's a plane ride away to Spain for paella - Chicken and the Sea, then Belgium Waffle with Fried Chicken and Swiss Rosti with Chicken and Mushroom. After which you could take a train down to France for some Confit Duck Puff, if you like. The menu is actually kind of fun. The idea is to order a few "mammoth-sized" dishes and some sides, although we went for individual servings instead to taste a bit of everything.

Spathe Garlic Fries, $5, Buffalo Wings, $15

We ended up getting 3 orders of the fries, and it wasn't even that the servings were small at all, but the fries tossed in chilli and garlic were seriously tasty stuff! You bet it was a roaring crowd pleaser. The buffalo wings, on the other hand, tasted a little flat. But I must confess that I'm all about full-sized buffalo wings drenched in pungent and heady coats of sauce.

We weren't too taken with the Sangria either, which was a tad diluted, but found the potato gnocchi with mixed mushrooms and pumpkin ricotta surprisingly enjoyable in a hearty, delicious way.

Sous Vide Spanish Octopus Salad, Spathe Public House, Mohamed Sultan

Spanish Octopus Salad, $18

The Spanish Octopus Salad was a fabulous bowl of smokey, delicious chunks of octopus grilled to perfection tossed in greens, honey, and slivers of orange. Probably the best dish of the night. The grilled octopus was full of flavour and tasted amazing. You won't want to miss this!

The slow-cooked pork belly was fantastic as well - incredibly tender and delicious. The quarter-metre dog (individual serving) was a tad plain, nothing more than your ordinary dog, though I can imagine that the actual mammoth-sized metre dog would be quite a sight to behold (and probably worth the novelty).

Provencal Baked NZ Mussels, Spathe Public House, Mohamed Sultan
Confit Duck Puff, Spathe Public House, Mohamed Sultan
Chicken and the Sea, $25, Confit Duck Puff, $18

Chicken and the sea, Spathe's paella, was excellently done - deeply flavourful with plumb mussels adorning the sides - save for the fact that you don't get to have those precious charred bits at the bottom, which is what makes paella, paella. Shame! Our last dish, the confit duck puff served on a bed of caramelised onions, won all of us over with the fantastic flavours from the marinated duck. The crumbly, buttery crust tasted really great with the delicious bits of duck.

Overall, we had a good time and there were definitely more hits than misses. Not all restaurants are kind to big crowds, so Spathe's a great option if you have a bulging entourage.

Recommendations: Spathe Garlic Fries, Spanish Octopus Salad, 12 Hour Slow-Cooked Pork Belly, Chicken and the Sea, Confit Duck Puff
I'll skip: Buffalo Wings
