The Providore
I'm actually always looking for chic places with great coffee and simple, delicious food. Life is complicated as it is, so I like my food simple. Or maybe I just like to feel as though I'm dining in a friend's (or my own) very stylish home. In any case, I am drawn to these places like bees to honey and I am incredibly pleased that I don't have to find my way to Robertson Quay for Toby Estate coffee anymore. The prospect of good coffee in between strolls in town just sounds so idyllic. Lo and behold, the Providore!
Flat White, $5, Breakfast BLT, $14.50
You would know Jones the Grocer, no doubt - the people behind the Providore were actually the ones who brought in Jones, the latter being the fruition of their dream of a made in Asia gourmet brand, since they returned the Jones franchise a year ago. Yes, why not? Guys, you've got my full support. I wouldn't blame some of you for finding a few of the options here a little too plain, but still I bask in the glorious simplicity of fresh cheese, tomatoes and bacon. Prices are not exactly cheap, to be honest, but then again a meal won't set you back by much either.
Grilled Portobello Mushrooms, $16.50
I've got to say I'm completely partial to the Grilled Portobello Mushroom toast. It must be the runny yolk. Or the whole portobello mushroom grilled to juicy perfection. Or perhaps the plumb vine tomatoes, who knows? It's a gorgeous combination. Let's face it - the best kind of food are the tasty ones that don't end up guilt tripping you, no?
Scones, $2.50
When it came to the scones though, the taste and texture was closer to bread and wasn't exactly the 'biscuity' scone I had in mind. The jam was delicious, however, and somewhat saved the day. Tip: Don't leave without scanning their shelves of gourmet supplies ranging from delicious jam and pasta sauces to premium tea and single origin coffee.
