I think it's safe to say that none of us will find Robertson Quay dull anytime soon, with new restaurants like Spathe Public House and Bomba Paella Bar jazzing up the scene every now and then. It's communal dining over here at Spathe Public House, (nothing less than the "it" dining mode these days,) with a plethora of dishes with such varied influences you might just feel like you went on a round-the-world trip in 60 minutes.

Esquina
[Spanish Tapas] Confession: I haven't been to Esquina. Yes, I know - how could I? It's a sin, really, with the menu designed by Jason Atherton sounding so great - sea urchin and crab bisque, slow-cooked egg with crispy iberico and beef tartare with frozen foie gras. Although what I'm really excited to try is their oysters and vietnamese dressing. Esquina's certainly a more sophisticated, world-wise cousin of Keong Saik Snacks (which I loved). They've also launched three-course lunch sets at $35, and a ten-course dinner tasting menu for $95 now so I'm completely out of excuses not to visit. - No Reservations

I have always, always, been a fan of Spanish food. And it seems like these days, everyone else has jumped on the Spanish wagon too. I mean, just look at the record number of Spanish (and Spanish inspired) restaurants popping up all over our island! Some sort of Español fever is here, no doubt - boy, am I excited - and Bomba Paella is right there in the action.

Lolla, Ann Siang Hill - Kick-ass Small Plates

I have to admit - I fumbled around for a while trying to think of the most suitable one-liner to describe Lolla's small plates. Inspired? True but a total rip-off from their website. Inventive? Most certainly, yes, but I didn't want to side-line the classics that have been mercifully left unadulterated, thank heavens. What do all these small plates have in common? Kick-ass - that's it - they all kick ass. Lolla is honestly one of the most satisfying meals I've had this year, so I guess it's only fitting that I leave you with these pictures before 2012 flits by.

Tapas Hopping in Barcelona - 4 places not to miss!

I have gushed about Barcelona's amazing tapas on more than one occasion. (Can you blame me?) On many of these occasions, people have informed me flat out that Tapas is a tourist thing. I don't buy it. True, tapas originated from the Basque region of Spain, and not Catalonia where Barcelona is capital. But looking at the myriad tapas bars springing up in nearly every corner of the city and the locals weaving in and out constantly for a perk-me-up, how can anyone not believe that tapas has become an essential part of the Barcelona lifestyle? If affordable bubbly (Cava) and snack-sized indulgences (a McFoie burger, maybe? or Sirloin pincho?) are your kinda thing, this one is for you.

Loco Spanish Tapas Bar, Boat Quay, Singapore - Kick Ass Paella!

One of my favourite memories in Barcelona was tapas bar hopping. The energy in all the tapas bars was just so infectious! And the sheer variety kept things interesting. So when I saw that Loco Spanish Tapas Bar was offering complimentary tapas for every drink, I immediately told my best friend, S, and we quickly circled a date to visit. We were imagining platters of tapas for every drink but as it turned out, they really meant single servings of pincho style tapas. Our imagination ran too wild! We were served shrimp on toasted bread and cod on toasted bread - they were a tad cold but actually rather tasty. Their sangria didn't get me hooked though, since I prefer mine a bit sweeter. Of course, this would be nothing to write to you about. Thankfully, despite stumbling into Loco for mistaken reasons, we found some right ones by the end of our meal!
