Portugese Egg Tarts v. Pastel de Nata

Portugese Egg Tarts from Margaret's Cafe e Nata, Macau

There is a very good reason why the best Portugese egg tarts are found in Macau and not Portugal. Portuguese egg tarts do not exist in Portugal! Ever since I visited Margaret's Cafe e Nata in Macau, which serves one of, if not the best Portugese egg tarts in the whole of Macau, I've been dreaming of flying off to Portugal to eat these sweet, delicious, wobbly, crispy things at its source. Because everything is better at its source, right? Wrong. Portugese Egg Tarts and Pastel de Nata aren't even the same thing!

Leitaria I Son and Tai Lei Loi Kee, Macau

Monday, July 5, 2010

Leitaria I Son is a small char chan teng style eatery famous for milk-based puddings and dessert. They have a few branches in Hong Kong as well. As this branch was centrally located in Senado Square, it was the first thing we ate when we arrived in Macau! The four of us ordered four milk puddings and two pork chop buns to share and kick start the day mmmm.

A Lorcha, Peninsula de Macau, Macau

So we found out that dining in one of Macau's Portugese restaurants was one of the things we really shouldn't miss while we're here. These restaurants are very popular, and reservations are highly recommended. As our short trip was pretty last minute, we almost couldn't get a table at any of the recommended restaurants. We tried Amagao, but were firmly rejected. Then we dialed for A Lorcha. A lady tried to tell us that it was fully booked. We asked if there was any time slot we could take, any at all. The lady passed the phone to a man, who said yes, we could go there at 8pm. Great!

Throughout my life, many people have raved to me about portugese egg tarts. But I could never understand their passion for the egg custard pastry. Sure, I've had good egg tarts before in both Singapore and Hong Kong. But it was not worth going crazy over. Besides, just how much better can the portugese egg tarts in Macau be compared to those in Singapore or Hong Kong? I was so, so wrong. Completely and unbelievably wrong.
