My Awesome Café, Indeed - Telok Ayer, Singapore

Monday, March 3, 2014
My Awesome Cafe
My Awesome Café

My Awesome Café has the kind of laid-back charm that draws you in the minute you see it. All the diners are relaxed, casually people-watching and chowing on wholesome sandwiches - it's a picture perfect scene that I wanted to be a part of immediately. It's not everyday that a café plays up retro kitsch to such marvellous effect. Plus, the bread I was eyeing looked pretty amazing.

Ronin @ Hong Kong Street - Dapper Haunt

Sunday, January 12, 2014
Ronin
Ronin

Happy 2014! I know I've been away for a bit - had the most magical time at Christmas and New Years' (mostly at house parties) with loved ones - I hope December has been absolutely wonderful for you too. Have you been to Ronin? The latest café by the guys behind the Plain is also the most dapper yet. Man, it's been a long time since I've felt such a strong urge to gush about a place to everyone I know.

Maple & Market - Wonderful Cakes, Great Coffee

Sunday, December 8, 2013
Maple & Market
Maple & Market

I have a soft spot for places that are right smack in the middle of nowhere. Or perhaps, to be more accurate, the only café in a decidedly quiet neighbourhood is just that much more charming than a row of cafés. I guess it feels more like a secret, even if it isn't exactly one.

Drury Lane Café, Duxton - Relaxed, Unpretentious Café

Wednesday, November 27, 2013
Drury Lane

Just when I thought there couldn't possibly be space for another café at Duxton, I discovered Drury Lane. Great coffee, relaxed atmosphere, good prices - honestly, I'm not sure what more I could have asked for.

Comman Man Coffee Roasters, Martin Road - Great Coffee, Delicious Food

Common Man Roasters
Common Man Coffee Roasters

Not all places that serve great coffee serve equally inspiring food. Sometimes, not everything that sounds inspiring on the menu wind up tasting good. Common Man Coffee Roasters manages to avoid both pitfalls - clearly, having the word 'common' in your name doesn't necessarily make you such. Only problem is, you'll have difficulty getting a table. Don't ask me how I managed to squeeze myself in there on a Sunday morning. This place is packed.

Brawn and Brains, Singapore - Cosy Coffee Haunt

Brawn and Brains

I found great coffee where I thought I would never find it - beside a climbing gym. Imagine that! I've been getting into sport climbing lately, so this cosy coffee haunt tucked away right beside the gym is pure gold. The name makes a lot of sense, too, if you subscribe to the assumption that coffee makes you smart, that is.

Kith Café, Quayside Isle - Quick Escape

Tuesday, August 27, 2013
Kith Cafe, Quayside Isle
Kith @ Quayside Isle

If you're wondering where the crowd has gone on weekends, the ones in-the-know have all migrated to Quayside Isle. It's bustling but not overcrowded, if that even makes sense, and just perfect for a lazy Sunday. I spent all morning reading magazines and basking in the sun, fully relaxed since Quayside Isle is new and foreign enough for me to quite easily kid myself into thinking I've gone on a weekend escape. And isn't that all we need sometimes?

The Providore - Gourmet Food and Supplies, Anyone?

Flat White, The Providore
The Providore

I'm actually always looking for chic places with great coffee and simple, delicious food. Life is complicated as it is, so I like my food simple. Or maybe I just like to feel as though I'm dining in a friend's (or my own) very stylish home. In any case, I am drawn to these places like bees to honey and I am incredibly pleased that I don't have to find my way to Robertson Quay for Toby Estate coffee anymore. The prospect of good coffee in between strolls in town just sounds so idyllic. Lo and behold, the Providore!

snickers tart, overdoughs
Snickers Tart, $6

Thank heavens the skies are clearing! At least it no longer feels so foolish to lounge away lazy afternoons at al fresco restaurants like Artichoke (i.e. gem #1). If the main restaurant and lovely, not to mention edible, garden have not drawn you to this oasis in the middle of the city, their bakery should do the trick.

Oriole Coffee Roasters - Retro Hole-in-the-Wall

Wednesday, May 1, 2013
Oriole Coffee Roasters, Singapore
Hole-in-the-wall shophouse

I think Oriole Coffee Roasters might just be the only specialty coffee joint in town not serving hardcore brunch (apart from Kiasu Espresso - but that's in the CBD i.e. not exactly my destination of choice on a weekend). SCORE. This is the place to go if you're looking for somewhere to unwind, or read a book quietly, with a cuppa balanced on one hand. Especially if you have no ardent wish whatsoever to jostle with the weekend brunch crowd.

Do you know Eng Hoon Street? I'm sure you do, especially after Tiong Bahru Bakery shot to fame. Right next to it, though, often overlooked, is the Orange Thimble. Part art gallery, part café; part retro, part modern. They serve the usual - eggs fry-up, tarts, pastries, sandwiches, and coffee. Good coffee.

40 Hands, Yong Siak Street
Flat White, $5

Maybe one day I'll realize how much money I've spilled spending weekend after weekend waking up to idyllic brunches (read overpriced eggs), then spending the rest of the day having fair trade coffee from exotic locales. Maybe it's excessive, superficial, even foolish. But for what it's worth, I feel alive - sipping coffee, completely unwinding burdens of the week past, having random, witty discourse with close friends, enjoying the laid-back music, and half wondering how is it that all these cafés have such amazing playlists... One day I'll wisen up, maybe. But not today, not yet.

Chillax Massage Café, Serangoon Gardens - Casual Luxe

Wednesday, July 4, 2012
Chillax Massage Cafe
Casual Hang Out Spot

[This is a short one!] It's easy to find somewhere luxe in Singapore, and even easier to find somewhere casual, but when it's both casual and luxe... well that's Chillax Massage Café for you. It's perfect if all you want is somewhere casual for a couple of drinks, but with better thought out food. It's a shame that I was so quick to judge the book by its cover (or in this case, title,) - I almost instantly dismissed the café as a sleazy massage parlour's afterthought. Thankfully, my wandering eyes caught a glimpse of the menu... *Truffle fries alert*

Jimmy Monkey, Singapore - Melbourne Coffee, Turkish Bread

Sunday, June 17, 2012
Jimmy Monkey, One-North
How do you like the shabby chic decor?

Hello everyone! I just got back from an 8-day trip to Saigon, Hue and Hanoi - such an incredible eating journey, but more on that in the next week or so. Funny enough, each time I come back from a trip, I seem to discover new cafés that I never knew existed. Thankfully, even as I lose speed catching up with the rapidly changing food scene, my closest friends are always up to date. This time, I was brought to Jimmy Monkey - a chilled out café opened by a Melbournian, specializing in... what did you think, coffee, of course.

The Bark Café, Singapore - What do you say we get some chicken wings for supper?

Friday, June 1, 2012
The Bark Café, Singapore
Resort Décor

I say that to M a lot, and he stops me from my reckless gluttony most of the time. We've been making it a kind of game, watching what we eat on most days, then letting loose when we go for dinners. But on his birthday, we caved. Not that it was on purpose, I hadn't planned on it. We were done strolling the streets after dinner and wanted somewhere with a chilled vibe for some drinks and bites. A quick google later, we discovered the Bark Café and decided that was it.

Food Diary #6

Saturday, April 14, 2012
Toby's estate's piccolo latteIkea's Shrimp
Hummerston's pancakesHummerston's pancake accompaniments

One Piccolo Latte, Toby's Estate, $4.50 | Two Cold Water Prawns, Ikea, $4.20 | Three Pancakes and Accompaniments (Maple syrup, Whipped Butter, Fruit Compote), Hummerstons, $17

Posts have been slow since I'm currently in a last burst of fire for my final finals. Feels all surreal and strange to finally be graduating! In any case, here are some pictures of what I've been "chowing" down these days. Mostly comfort food. I finally tried Toby's Estate's coffee. Definitely a great place to get your caffeine fix besides Papa Palheta. They serve smooth and delicious Coffee in a cool, reformed industrial sort of setting. Tons better than the Flat White at Wild Honey, by the way. Wifi's available too.

I first fell in love with Ikea's meatballs, then their chicken wings, and now I've discovered their Fresh Water Prawns. How is it that most of these little prawns are filled with so much roe?? I don't know but I'm so pleased I finally found out about these sweet, delicious things!

I dropped by Hummerston's for brunch as well. You can check out their cool decor here. It's really popular right now, to the extent that the place was completely packed on a Thursday afternoon! Most tables had a plate of Hummerston's Breakfast, but I found that pretty underwhelming. The sausages were great, but the asparagus was anorexic and the mushrooms were pretty run of the mill. Their Pancakes, on the other hand, turned out to be fantastic! Soft and fluffy while still retaining a good bite. The accompaniments were great as well - real maple syrup's still not that commonplace, after all. Don't miss out on their pancakes if you're heading to Hummerston's for brunch!

Brunch at Artichoke Café & Bar, Singapore - Just Perfect

Monday, March 5, 2012
Artichoke
ArtichokeFruit and Yoghurt with Bubbly, Artichoke
Pares Balta Cava Brut (Bubbly), $9

I think I've found the most charming Brunch destination in Singapore. Everything from the decor down to the food was simply marvelous. I loved how they brought together Mediterranean flavours and influences from some of my favourite cities - Spain, Greece and Morocco. The result is unexpectedly wonderful - you get to enjoy Cava from Spain, strained Yoghurt and smoky Haloumi from Greece, Shakshouka from the Middle East, and so on, all in one place.

Last week, I finally visited the very quaint K Ki nestled on Ann Siang Hill for a long due catch up with my lovely friend, E. It was one of those rainy late afternoons, which somehow added to the atmosphere, once we were done braving the rain, that is. Hot tea was necessary!
