The Communal - Trendy Southern Fare [closed]

The Communal
The Communal

Isn't it funny how everyone's talking about the gentrification of Jalan Besar (and not too long ago, Tiong Bahru) but no one's really talked about North Canal road? I mean, you have Sur (new South American kid on the block), Mad Men Attic Bar, and the Communal practically inches away from each other. And they're all amazing, by the way. It's almost a little too good to be true. See, working in the CBD has its perks, it's not all about the communal squeezing in the trains twice a day, pun not quite intended.

The Bark Café, Singapore - What do you say we get some chicken wings for supper?

The Bark Café, Singapore
Resort Décor

I say that to M a lot, and he stops me from my reckless gluttony most of the time. We've been making it a kind of game, watching what we eat on most days, then letting loose when we go for dinners. But on his birthday, we caved. Not that it was on purpose, I hadn't planned on it. We were done strolling the streets after dinner and wanted somewhere with a chilled vibe for some drinks and bites. A quick google later, we discovered the Bark Café and decided that was it.

Snapshot: Singapore's Spiciest Buffalo Wings at Buckaroo BBQ & Grill

1/2 Dozen of Level Two Spicy Buffalo Wings, $19.80

My stomach churns even as I'm looking at this! Have you tried the spicy buffalo wings at Buckaroo's? My friends and I started with the level two wings, which were very enjoyable, actually. The wings were coated with a surprisingly tasty hot and sour sauce that had just the right amount of kick! Only levels 1-3 wings are on the menu, the rest (up till level 10) are $1.20 per dozen for every additional level and diners are warned to order them at your own risk. So yes, we were warned, but after polishing the level two wings, we got a little bit too confident and went straight to level 5. Well, let's just say we were... overwhelmed? I had one and a half wings and that was all I could handle... all the while blinking away sweat and tears... Why do we sometimes pay to torture ourselves? I guess it's all part of the experience. That said, I'm staying off buffalo wings for a while(:

Snapshot: Ikea's Deep Fried Chicken Wings

Ikea chicken wings
Ikea's Deep Fried Chicken Wings, $2.80 for 2, $7.50 for 6

There's something about biting into a juicy and freshly deep fried chicken wing that satisfies me to no end. Apparently I'm not alone, since I've noticed that almost every table sports a platter of Ikea's chicken wings every single time I dine at their restaurant. And it's hardly a mystery why - their chicken wings are crispy, juicy and tastes delightfully of Har Cheong (prawn paste). I used to head to Ikea for their meat balls, but now their chicken wings have taken centre stage . Besides, these wings are only available in Ikea Singapore - it's one of those ridiculously minuscule things that makes me love my country just that little bit more.

Snapshot: My Favourite Deep-Fried Chicken Wings!

Deep Fried Chicken Wings
Fantastic Singapore-Western-Style Deep Fried Chicken Wings

This may look ordinary but seriously, this is hands down my favourite Singapore-Western-Style Deep Fried Chicken Wings! By Singapore-Western-Style I mean that common Hawker Centre Western Stall batter for fried chicken. It's so common but so great and also slightly nostalgic. And I guess it's not that common anymore since I've tried ordering fried chicken from a few other Hawker Centre Western Stalls to much disappointment. This, however, never disappoints. It's crispy, juicy and ridiculously tasty. I mean, they fry it to order and not in batches. This alone would have pushed it a few notches up chicken wing ranks. If I haven't been so unhealthy in everything I've been eating (sigh, gotta do something about this), I would have made this my regular unhealthy snack and would expect to be pretty pleased with life.

It's actually kinda funny how I came to know about this stall. I used to give tuition to a kid in the next block and grabbed this pretty often as a late-night snack. At that time, I thought this was pretty great Singapore-Western-Style Deep Fried Chicken Wings. It was only after some time (a few years, actually) that I realized not everybody is capable of making chicken wings like these. It didn't take much to convince M to bring me here, and we had a great night chomping down the chicken wings.

This hidden gem of a stall is located in Blk 406 Tampines Street 41 (rejoice!), and goes by the name of A1 Family Ayam Goreng.

Popeyes Chicken and Biscuits, The Cathay, Singapore

Popeyes Chicken and Biscuits
Popeyes Chicken and Biscuits, Mashed Potato
Popeyes Chicken and Biscuits, Popcorn Shrimp

We had to do Popeyes, because sometimes fried chicken is all you want to eat, no? I'm not a food snob. I don't think it's blasphemous to sometimes crave fast food. Not all chi chi food are healthy too: think Wagyu or Foie Gras. As with almost everything yummy on this planet, moderation is key. Besides, there's a certain delight in crunching into deep fried chicken. Yum. I do like KFC's fried chicken, especially the original, but the ones at Popeyes has a crispier skin, and somehow tastes just a tad healthier! Oh the popcorn shrimp was a really sore disappointment - tough and far from crispy, it tasted like it had been left untouched for hours. Did your popcorn shrimp from Popeyes ever turn out this way? The mashed potatoes were great though, I love the bits of meat and spices in the savoury gravy. And the buttery biscuit was perfect for dunking into the mashed potatoes. So, deep fried chicken and biscuits, anyone?
