Bedrock Bar & Grill - No-Nonsense Steaks, Singapore

Bedrock Bar & Grill

Bedrock Bar & Grill is the kind of steakhouse that hits all the right notes. It's classy enough, achingly hip and serves up a damned good steak. The kind of steakhouse I could imagine in downtown Manhattan.

The Market Grill, Singapore - Great Steaks and Burgers

The Market Grill
The Market Grill

Over the years, I've unwittingly grown exponentially in love with everything a cow has to offer - stinky cheeses, creamy yoghurts, hermès handbags, sinful burgers, tender roasts, smoky steaks - you name it. I do try to do some salad lunches to make up for my carnivorous sins but I guess it is what it is. So, you know, I figured if I'm going to 'sin' anyway, might as well make sure it's tasty. You bet I was pleased to find out that the Market Grill offers some very delicious options indeed.

Fat Cow, Singapore - Amazing Kikaku Menu

Fat Cow

When, exactly, did steak gravitate so heavily from diner grub to gourmet chow? No answers here, just buckets of gratitude because these days I still feel like a lady even after working through my meats. Steak and sophistication are not mutually exclusive. Probably not that new a phenomenon, but still, how nice. At this sophisticated end of the spectrum lies Fat Cow, a veritable Japanese inspired steakhouse that applies the Japanese obsession with perfection on the American steak. Boy, as you can imagine, what a meal.

9 Restaurants I'm Dying to Try - May 2013

Sunday, May 12, 2013
Untitled

Esquina
[Spanish Tapas] Confession: I haven't been to Esquina. Yes, I know - how could I? It's a sin, really, with the menu designed by Jason Atherton sounding so great - sea urchin and crab bisque, slow-cooked egg with crispy iberico and beef tartare with frozen foie gras. Although what I'm really excited to try is their oysters and vietnamese dressing. Esquina's certainly a more sophisticated, world-wise cousin of Keong Saik Snacks (which I loved). They've also launched three-course lunch sets at $35, and a ten-course dinner tasting menu for $95 now so I'm completely out of excuses not to visit. - No Reservations

Alkaff Mansion Ristorante, Singapore - Bring on the Romance

Trendy dates to bistros, hip bars, and slick restaurants are all well and good, but sometimes, isn't a full-blown romantic dinner refreshing? The irony! It's a new age we live in. But if you're keen on bucking the trend, gentlemen, and reveal a little bit of that "softie" inside, there's probably no better place than Alkaff Mansion for your purpose.

Omakase at Hachi was simply one of my best meals this year. There's nothing quite like surrendering your night to the able chops of a Japanese chef, letting him surprise you course by course, assembled with only the freshest seasonal produce, of course. The omakase I had that night, two months back (still as vivid as yesterday, honest!), showcased all of my favourite ingredients too, would you believe it? Sashimi? Checked. Oyster? Uni? Otoro? Wagyu? Checked!

At a restaurant as trendy as Skirt, located in the swanky W Singapore, (which landed fashionably on our shores barely a month ago,) it is almost too easy to discount expectations for the food on counts of everything else. But the team at Skirt should feel rightly vindicated - this new kid on the cove is the definition of style meeting substance.

I'm back from my grad trip! It's been an amazing three weeks filled with too many fish, chips and oysters to count - now I'm all ready to get back to my usual posting frequencies. A big thank you for sticking around! This... was how I celebrated the end of my last finals, before rushing full throttle to the airport immediately after (only possible thanks to my amazing dad) - a huge, huge slab of steak all to myself, all the time clinking glasses with a fantastic bunch of friends. This is the life, isn't it?

Angus Steak House - Fabulous Set Dinners!

Thursday, February 2, 2012
Angus House
Angus Steak House

As a child, there were certain restaurants I dreamt about. Sometimes, I read about them, other times, I walked by and just couldn't seem to take my eyes off them. Angus Steak House is both. Almost everything I've read about it has been all roses and no thorns. And it's the sort of restaurant that looks so classy and pretty on the outside I can't help but dream about how perfect it must be to finally dine there - I loved that the walls of the restaurant were all washed in white, with colonial style windows that lent me a sneak peak into the "world" inside. But somehow, in the blur of growing up, this and other dream restaurants of my childhood retreated to the back of my mind - I was too busy worrying about a million other things. So many new restaurants sprang up, too. But when my parents asked me where I wanted to go for my birthday dinner two weeks ago, Angus Steak House suddenly came to mind. After renovating last year, apart from the ambience remaining perfect for dinner dates, the restaurant is now a lot more modern than what I remembered, complete with plush, cream-coloured chairs and elegant dark wood tables.

Hors d'oeuvre - Lightly Battered Prawns with Broccoli and Cracker in Seafood Sauce

The most amazing part about dining here is the choice of making any a la carte charcoal grilled mains a set by topping up $10, which would include in your meal a hors d'oeuvre, freshly baked bun, salad, soup and dessert. Completely irresistible. It used to be even more of a steal at $6 and included coffee or tea, but I guess I chanced upon the scene too late! The hors d'oeuvre of the day was a plate of two lightly battered prawns, thin cracker and a wonderful, orange-pink sauce full of crustacean notes. It was such a fantastic start. The prawns were excellent - crunchy, firm and absolutely delicious with the sauce. The cracker was not as crisp as it could have been but still perfect for mopping up more of that delectable sauce. The appetizers change every fortnight, which mixes things up quite a bit. Check out the past hors d'oeuvres here, they all look fabulous!

Mushroom Soup, Complimentary Bread Roll, Interior

If I wake up one day and all I have in mind is a quick French meal, (just the mains - no appetizers, not even desserts,) La Petite Cuisine will be the first place that pops into my mind. This was one meal where I sincerely wished I'd cut to the chase. Why did I order such a thin, bland and over-salted Mushroom Soup? Why did I bother eating cold bread rolls? Not even butter can remedy cold bread rolls... don't you think so?

An Indulgent Lunch at db Bistro Moderne, Marina Bay Sands, Singapore

Complimentary Bread
Complimentary Bread

One thing's for certain - I've been missing out on good lunches. The past year was a blur - I can hardly remember occasions when I could afford time for a leisurely lunch. Even more embarrassing to admit, there were days when I had time, but somehow I ended up watching it slip me by, eventually resorting to grabbing quick bites. No more. My new year resolution #3 is to squeeze in good lunches whenever possible! This is why I knew I had to sit down with a good friend for an indulgent lunch at DB Bistro Moderne before the curtains for 2011 were drawn.

Duck Pâté, db Bistro Moderne, Singapore

Duck Pâté, Toasted Sourdough

The complimentary bread was good with butter (what isn't?), but once the duck pâté and sourdough came along, we quickly forgot about it. Paired with the sourdough, the pâté almost tastes like ham. All I'm saying is, unless you smear a large chunk on your sourdough, the subtleties in the flavour are hard to detect. If you taste it on its own, though, there is a hint of liver and the flavours are more complex, in a good way. This was part of the Menu Bouchon Prix Fixe - we chose the 3 course menu for $48. Next time, I'll be happy to give the Beetroot Salad a try since it features deep fried goat cheese - one of my favourites. Have you tried?

Dozo's Yuzu Sorbet
Dozo
Yuzu Sorbet, Noodle Snack

Dozo was fantastic. From the complimentary yuzu sorbet down to the desserts, each course was a wonderful surprise. Initially, I was a little apprehensive, wondering if it would be any different from Tao's (its sister restaurant). My worries were completely unnecessary. You may be paying almost twice what you'd pay at Tao's, but you're getting more than twice in terms of quality and service. When I was at Tao's, I sometimes wondered to myself if certain dishes should count as a "course" in itself, but at Dozo, you're definitely getting the real deal. Even the Yuzu sorbet was markedly superior. It was tangy and refreshing with a great balance of texture and just slushy enough to pass off as a drink instead of dessert - completely different from the one at Tao's. You get a larger serving, too. The fried noodle snacks were visually appealing and fun - the orange ones even had a bit of a spicy kick!

Macarons from Ladurée

With only 3 days in Paris, it was imperative that a dining strategy was in place. Mine was pretty straightforward: a Michelin-starred restaurant, a classic Paris bistro, and macarons from both Ladurée and Pierre Hermé. If I hadn't had a Cancale oyster overload at Saint Malo in Normandy right before Paris, a healthy dosage of oysters from the famed Huitrerie Régis would be in order too. After all, oysters are my favourite.
