Bedrock Bar & Grill

Bedrock Bar & Grill is the kind of steakhouse that hits all the right notes. It's classy enough, achingly hip and serves up a damned good steak. The kind of steakhouse I could imagine in downtown Manhattan.

Complimentary Flat Bread

Unlike at most places, the bread served here is far from an afterthought. It was actually, truly wonderful. The freshly baked flatbread was served piping hot with not just butter, but also a spread of delicious roasted garlic cloves perfect for lending a nutty, spicy edge.

Australian Grass Fed Porterhouse Steak, $89

Generally, I admire steakhouses that serve a no-nonsense steak; that is, serving it naked, allowing the meat to speak for itself. Bedrock does just that. We had the Australian Grass-Fed Porterhouse, $89, that night. Four servings of it. The steaks were beautifully charred and gorgeously rich in flavour. We were recommended to go for medium for this cut, and told that medium rare would be a little tough. We decided to try both and I live to report that the recommendations made by the knowledgeable waitstaff should be heeded. That said, while the medium rare steak really (and I mean really) put our jaw strength to test, it was juicier and I would even go as far to say that it was a tad more tasty. But go for medium.

We also got to choose from an array of sauces and condiments, which were very well done in fact (particularly the fiery chilli), but who needs sauces when the steak is good naked?

Mac n' Cheese, Bedrock Bar & Grill

Mac n' Cheese, $20, Duck Fat Potatoes, $16

In the sides 'arena', the Duck Fat Potatoes, $16, was gloriously unremarkable, but the Mac n' Cheese, $20, was pretty amazing. The cheese was baked to perfection (as you can easily see), and the shallow pan means a good deal of very good burnt cheese to each scoop of macaroni. I'll certainly be back - the USDA Prime cuts and Tomahawk (F1 long-bone Wagyu) are very, very tempting.

Recommendations: Mac n' Cheese, Steaks
I'll skip: Duck Fat Potatoes
