Tai O Village, Lantau Island, Stilt Houses
Stilt houses, Tai O Village

Lantau island. I don't know about you, but I always thought that Lantau island was an island-in-name. You know, like how Singapore's an island. I mean, it's the name that pops up most often, it's the largest island in Hong Kong, it's where the Hong Kong Airport is located, as well as the rather classy Tung Chung Outlets, you can almost smell tourists in the air, how can you believe that there's an island life going on here? Well as it turns out, there is! At Tai O Village at least.

I did expect to see stilt houses, but I sure didn't expect to see people living in them. So incredible! A piece of heritage preserved.

Then there's the unbelievably unique houses scattered here and there.

It was real fun spotting these random spurts of creativity in the most unlikely places!

Strangely quaint gate

So vintage! And effortlessly so. They probably never planned for the gate to turn out this way.

Cool gate

Here we have a cool gate. Such a great idea, don't you think? The chinese words are probably poems.

More stilt houses

I wonder who lives in these stilt houses. Old village folks? Rich retirees looking for a retreat from the city? Perhaps the interiors of some of these stilt houses might even trump that of city dwellers!

How do you like what you see? I really loved walking through Tai O Village(:

Big Buddha

Is this worth the MTR ride to Tung Chung + Cable Car Ride + 268 steps?

Big Buddha

Well, it's a matter of travelling personality, isn't it? If you're not the type to climb 268 steps to see a religious statue, don't bother. But if you'd like to see a different side of Hong Kong, Lantau Island's a pretty good place to go, and the Big Buddha's a pretty cool sight. Just make sure you make your trip worth, don't miss out on visiting Tai O Village!

Next up: I'll be posting about the street food in Tai O!
