Japanese Ramen, Fried Prawns, Fried Oysters, Salmon Sashimi
Mini Sapporo Ramen with Fried Prawns, Fried Oysters, and Salmon Sashimi Set

My friends and I randomly chose this place for lunch one day. This ramen-ya purportedly serves 4 different styles of ramen - Sapporo, Tokyo, Kyushu and Kogashi. Each ramen syle also comes in a variety of soup bases such as miso, shio, shoyu and spicy miso. My dad used to tell me that a place that sells just one thing always does better than a place that sells everything. A generally accurate statement (with the exception of Hong Kong Char Chan Tengs). This is the case here. The ramen is not bad, but probably can't be compared to more dedicated ramen-yas like Santouka, Nantsutei, Baikoken, Menya Shinchan, etc. In terms of "heritage", Daikokuya isn't one of those highly-raved Japanese ramen-yas that surfaced on our shore. Even so, the ramen was really quite decent. So was the salmon sashimi.

The thing is, for a place without that much heritage and hype, the prices might be a little steep. When my friends and I were here, my Mini Sapporo Ramen set with Fried Prawns, Fried Oysters and Salmon Sashimi was $19, my friend's Mini Sapporo Ramen set with Japanese Curry Rice and Salmon Sashimi was about $17, and I believe the à la carte regular sized Ramen cost around $14-$15. Surprisingly though, the fried prawns and oysters were fresh, well-executed and very tasty.

My friend (who's twice my size almost) wasn't so pleased that his curry rice was really just curry and rice and nothing else, not even potatoes! I thought his statement was pretty funny. I guess this is the place to go if you're looking at having more than just Ramen, since they offer quite a variety of sets that allows you to try a little of everything. Note that the sets involve Mini Ramens. If you have a big appetite, I believe it only costs an additional $3 to top up your Ramen to the regular size. The great news is that they're actually running a really good promotion right now! Their Ramen Lunch Sets are going for only $15.80 from Monday to Friday, 11.30am to 3.00pm. The exact lunch sets that my friend and I got for $19 and $17 respectively. This puts Daikokuya at pretty good value. I might go back just for this, not exactly for the Ramen, but on account of everything that comes with it!
