Soup of the day

When you're out living alone, you start dreaming of delicious home-cooked meals, right? The thing about eating out in Hong Kong is that you really don't need to worry. People in Hong Kong don't waste time. You can get a quick meal of noodles, fried rice, or dishes with rice, in many proper eateries scattered across the city in about the same time and efficiency as any fast food joint. Obviously, even with the possibility of msg, this option far outweighs the nutrition of a big mac!

Cantonese Steamed Minced Pork with Cuttlefish

The great thing about Char Chan Tengs such as Dak Shing is that they sell close to everything: Western choices include pork chop, chicken chop and steak, while Cantonese choices include assorted gong zai min, noodles, fried rice, dishes with rice, you get the drift. Eating in places like this isn't only quick and fuss free, it's more often that not, surprisingly tasty. And if you choose dishes with rice, like I did, you get a glimspe of what home made Cantonese fare is all about. This minced pork dish, for one, is really good: savoury, salty, delicious, and simply wonderful with rice.

Steamed Fish, 50 HKD

But perhaps what is most incredible is that you get to eat a whole steamed fish, a very fresh one at that, along with a bowl of soup, rice, as well as a drink, for only 50 HKD. Isn't that amazing? At Dak Shing, the dishes with rice normally comes as a set, with rice, soup, as well as a drink, as is common in Char Chan Tengs. The dishes are so tasty, and prices so reasonable, that I've returned twice. I have to caution that there's probably some msg at work though, we always end up thirsty after the meal. Still, if you want tasty food at good prices, this is a pretty good place to go.

P.S. If you're having pork chop or similar western choices, choose rice as a side instead of spaghetti. Their spaghetti tends to be very overcooked!
