How's your weekend going? I had a lovely brunch here with M yesterday. I'm really curious: How do you like your pancakes? Thick? Soft? Fluffy? My ideal pancake is really fluffy, soft and not too thick. The ones here come pretty close, though I'd love it if it was just a little fluffier (and a little less dense)!
Shot of Maple Syrup with Rum and Raisin Butter (left), Herbs and Garlic Butter (right)
The pancakes come with a shot of maple syrup and a choice of butter. I chose rum and raisin while M had herbs and garlic. The rum and raisin butter comes with a few raisins at the side, and was somehow very refreshing (probably the alcohol effect). I liked it on my pancakes. The herbs and garlic butter was flavourful and garlicky, which is great for garlic lovers (we loved it), but watch out if you're not one! I love the fact that they serve pure canadian maple syrup. This 'real deal' may be thin and almost watery (very different from the thick, sticky maple 'flavoured' syrups out there), but it should not be underestimated. It tastes a lot better even though it has a more delicate flavour. The intensity of the flavour is apparently grade dependent.
Garlic Buttered Prawns with Pancakes and Cherry Tomato Salad (and rockets), $14
I had the garlic buttered prawn pancakes, which really exceeded my expectations! The prawns had a great crunch to it (some might find it a lil artificial, but I love prawns with this texture) and the garlic butter sauce, which was every bit as buttery as the description had promised, was very addictive. My favourite parts of the pancakes were those that were soaked in the garlic butter sauce - they were absolutely heavenly with the maple syrup. Oh my. It was so much butter, so sinful, but so satisfying. The sauce is heavily loaded with chopped garlic, which lent a sharp edge to the sauce that I liked (again, watch out if you're not a garlic fan!).
Medium Stack, $7, with Scrambled Eggs, $2.50
M had a medium stack (3 pancakes) with a side of scrambled eggs, which was simple but still pretty good. The scrambled eggs were alright, but the pancakes were great - they do a really good job of soaking up the maple syrup, so you get that wonderful balance of maple goodness in every bite. I also loved that the pancakes were hardly sweet, so they go well with the savoury sides and the maple syrup really stands out.
Surprisingly, the medium stack (3 pancakes) isn't as teeny as it seems. In fact, we were both pretty full by the time we finished brunch! I'll probably order the short stack (2 pancakes) next time, and just enjoy the simplicity of pancakes with pure maple syrup.
P.S. I wish I still had some of those maple syrup I picked up in Canada last year..
